Although I haven't been working at the Catholic Charities Refugee Services Office in Nashville for too long, I can confidently and easily say that I have learned so much from the refugees I work with everyday. I am blessed to work with the Elder's Program in the mornings and the Youth After-School Program in the afternoons.

The Elders are the most amazing group of people. Each time I see them, I am struck by their kindness, generosity, and positive outlook on life. I always enjoy our sing-a-longs and dance parties in the car. It is inspiring to work with people who have suffered so much and have endured hardships that I can't even imagine, yet still are happy and ever so grateful to be living in the U.S. Despite the challenges they face here, they continue to share their gifts and joy with the people they meet.

The kids challenge me everyday to be stronger and have taught me so much. They have experienced things that no child ever should, but they are not discouraged. Their strength and perseverance is very admirable. And when they run up to me, wrap their arms around me and scream "Miss Sophie, I missed you" after a long weekend, my heart truly does melt.

I have come to see in my time here that refugees are a somewhat forgotten, or at the least, misunderstood demographic of our society. Society is really missing out on the knowledge and appreciation we gain from interacting with others. Everyday I find that I have learned something new or made a new friend. It is such an enriching and gratifying experience and I feel so lucky to be able to be a part of their lives.
