SW JVs work for structural change by serving individuals living on the margins of society, such as

  • immigrants
  • mental health patients
  • veterans living on the street
  • people recently incarcerated
  • at-risk children and teenagers
  • individuals living with addiction
  • those living in poverty

In doing so, JVs contemplate the complex problems of urban life.

  • lack of affordable housing
  • racism
  • racial tension
  • poverty
  • hunger
  • intolerance
  • homelessness

Solidarity is a funny thing.  I've head it preached in my jesuit education at Saint Joseph's University, I've pondered its meaning, and I've imagined the ability of experiencing it to the fullest, but solidarity has never resonated with me as it has in my last two weeks of working at Tubman House.

~ Katie Tente, SW JV 2008-2009

As I look back over this experience, there is so much I am thankful for.  The lessons I have learned from my clients, the mentors I have found in my workplace, the opportunity to pray with others, and the constant support we receive...JVC has given me ample time to examine myself and also to examine myself within the context of the four values.  I have been blessed this year to see that there are so many different ways in which these values manifest themselves.

~ Kate Koehler, SW JV 2007-2008
