JVC Detroit 15
Fun Fact: Traveled to 13 National Parks and hula hooped in all of them.
What passions and experiences brought you to JVC’s Staff?
I love opportunities to hear someone’s story. When people talk about JVC, it’s usually tied to things that ground them and are meaningful. I find that so engaging.
Where did you go to college and how did the experience shape you?
University of St. Thomas with a degree in Justice and Peace Studies. One of my professors told us, “a lot of what you learn here will break your heart but if you stick around, you will find even more reasons to be hopeful.” That speaks to my experience: there is great sadness and suffering in the world but the will to overcome and create change is bigger, bolder and brighter.
Who is your role model and why?
Krista Tippett, the host of On Being. Her podcasts remind me of the power and magic of real conversation, and the way stories can transform both the speaker and the listener. She asks generous questions in a way that invite honest, dignified and revelatory responses.
What is most rewarding about your role at JVC?
Getting to meet new people and celebrating the rich history and tradition of the JVs. There’s a special kinship I immediately feel when I find out someone is a former volunteer or a friend of JVC.
What is your favorite passage from the bible and why?
Ecclesiastes 9:7: “Go then, eat your food with joy and drink your wine with a merry heart; for God is pleased with your works.” I have come to know God through good food on the table and good people to eat it with. I like to think that shared meals delight God in a special way.
