Agency: Super Stars Literacy

Super Stars Literacy was founded in 2002 as a project of the Junior League of Oakland-East Bay, Inc. (JLOEB). The mission of Super Stars Literacy is to build literacy skills for children kindergarten through second grade in communities with limited resources. Our primary goal is for SSL students to enter 3rd grade reading at grade level, thus significantly increasing their chances of future school success.

In addition to building literacy skills, our program seeks to build cognitive competency and emotional resiliency Our roughly 35 full-time employees work exclusively in Title I elementary schools with children in kindergarten through second grades who exhibit significant delays in reading acquisition or reading skills development and thus are at serious risk of school failure. Example #2
Agency: Detroit Cristo Rey High School

Detroit Cristo Rey High School is part of a national network of Cristo Rey high schools that provide Catholic, college preparatory education to urban young people who live in communities with limited options. The school was opened in the fall of 2008, by the Basilian Fathers and the Sisters, Servants of the Immacualte Heart of Mary. Next year the school will add a junior class and have a total enrollment of about 250 students; primarily African American and Latino.

All Detroit Cristo Rey students participate in a work study program through which they finance the majority of the cost of their education, gain real world job experience, grow in self-confidence, and realize the relevance of their education. Detroit Cristo Rey students have a longer school day and a longer school year than their counterparts in other high schools because of the work study program. Academic Assistance and Counseling are available to the students to help prepare them for success in high school and college. (164 words).
